Church-going reflections

After the Mooncake Festival Celebration tonight, I was sitting in the church office with Minishorts, helping to fold the weekly bulletin for tomorrow's service. And the photocopy machine, which was making double-sided copies, somehow spewed out some sheets with the printing upside-down on one side.

"Never mind, we'll use them anyway," Sivin (our pastor) said.

I reflected how refreshing it is to be in a church where imperfection is allowed. I guess that's one of the big things that makes me feel comfortable in BLC (Bangsar Lutheran Church). There is a complete lack of pressure for you to be anyone other than who you are. You are welcome to be human, and to hang out. Very cool.

I've been going for Sunday service ever since the church camp. Okay, so the first week I was an hour late and the second week (last week) I was half-an-hour late. I'm not really properly "going" yet. But Sivin came up to me last Sunday and said, "Wow! Two weeks in a row! I've got to shake your hand. This is a record!"

My poor pastor, he is very long-suffering :P

I'm glad I went to church camp. The first Sunday we were back, I walked into the church hall and looked around and thought, Hey, I know these people!. Even though I didn't get to speak with all of them at camp, their faces are familiar to me now, and when I walk into church I'm not confronted by a sea of strange faces, y'know? This is good.

Minishorts has been putting together the weekly bulletin that is handed out to people on Sunday morning when they come for service. Now she's asked me to take turns with her. "Very easy wan!" she claimed. "You just take this from here and take that from there, put them in, change the date, and..."

I've agreed. I always agree first and panic later; I wonder whether this will turn out to be one of those oh-no-what-was-I-THINKING?!? decisions ;)

I've also joined the church's Christmas choir. Apparently we'll be performing in one of the major shopping malls in the city. *shudders*  This year seems to be my year to sing on stage -- I sang at Blink's wedding in May, and again at my friend Janelle's wedding in July. So I thought, why not continue this singing streak and join the choir?

All this means I'm "plugging in" to BLC a lot more... which is interesting.
