Not Manglish-ised yet
Somebody asked me today, "How come you speak like a Malaysian but you don't write like a Malaysian?"
Gee, I dunno. Maybe coz Manglish (Malaysian English), with its grammatical errors and all, looks & sounds so wrong when written down? Plus, we tend to use a lot of words from Malay and the Chinese Hokkien dialect. Translating along the way breaks the flow and causes the thing to lose its essence. I know not everybody who reads my blog is Malaysian ;)
One of the distinctives of Manglish is the way we like to append "lah" at the end of our sentences. It sort of punctuates the sentence or phrase. My cousin, who will be going to Scotland later this year for further studies, told me yesterday: "I've decided that I'm going to start a 'lah revolution' in Aberdeen."
Me: "You, start a 'lah revolution'?"
Her: "Yes!"
Me: "When you were small, you used to tell us, 'There is no such thing as lah!' whenever we said it!"
Her: "I'll teach the ang mos (white people) how to use the 'lah'. I think it'll be cool; then I'll have left my mark on the world."
She's so funny lah :D
