10 crazy, wonderful years
Janelle and I met up tonight and were chatting when she suddenly said, "Do you realise this year is our 10th anniversary?"
You see, she & I met at a Scripture Union camp in 1995. I discovered we shared the same birthday and promptly began calling her my "twin", which irritated her to no end coz she didn't want to be anybody's twin; she wanted to be unique!
After that camp, we kept in touch, writing snail mail (VERY sporadically) during the first years of college and university. Somehow, though we've been geographically separated for most of the 10 years, our friendship continued to deepen. Eventually we progressed from snail mail to email communication. Two years ago we became prayer partners, then grew into best friends. And she's right -- this year will be the 10th anniversary of our meeting. The actual date is sometime in early December.
"We should do something to celebrate. What is the traditional 10th anniversary gift?" she asked.
A Google search revealed the answer: tin.
We looked at each other. "Tin?!"
"I'm going to give you a Coca-cola can," Janelle vowed. "But I'm going to drink the Coke first."
Tin isn't so bad; the 11th anniversary gift is supposed to be steel. But after that things improve: silk and lace for the 12th and 13th anniversaries respectively. I can live with that
Then I thought of pewter. "Pewter! Pewter is an alloy, isn't it? What is pewter made of?"
Again, Google came to our rescue. "Royal Selangor pewter is composed of tin, with a small proportion of copper and antimony added to strengthen it," says the local brand's website. Another site says pewter contains over 90% tin. Janelle and I looked at each other. "That would work," she said.
"Yeah, 90% concentration is already quite high, isn't it?" I replied.
So it's settled: we're gonna get each other a pewter gift and plan a 10th anniversary celebration in December. Woohooo!! Who knows, we might even get daffodils, the 10th anniversary flower...
