My dear Mom

This so reminds me of Mom.
The other day I was on the phone with her and told her about my promotion. I also told her about being put in charge of maintaining our youth website.
Then, because I know she knows nothing about the Internet, I started telling her how wonderful the Internet is. I remember being amazed four years ago when I found out that you could find lyrics and guitar chord arrangements for Christian songs online. Before that I'd always had to figure out the chords myself on the piano, you see. And I can't function without chords -- don't have the gift of "playing by ear" (being able to instantly reproduce a song I've heard from somewhere), so chords are a real necessity to me.
Anyway, so I was talking to Mom and I was waxing lyrical about all the marvellous stuff you can find on the Internet. "There's this empty box where you just type in a phrase, press 'search', and all the results come out!" I enthused. "You don't even need to look up songbooks any more!" (This is a big deal coz most of the time I don't HAVE the books with me)
"Oh, of course books are better! I wouldn't know what to do with all those buttons," she said, sounding just like a flustered helpless little old lady. Mom is not old. She's only in her mid-fifties!
I was exasperated. "What buttons are you talking about? There are no buttons! I just told you, you type the phrase in and press 'search'. Where got any buttons?!!"
"Oh well, computers and I aren't very good friends," she excused herself.
You know what gets me? (1) She tries to talk about things she knows nothing about as if she does know something about them -- like assuming there are gazillions of confusing 'buttons' involved when she never in her life has seen a Google search page; (2) she doesn't know and doesn't care to know -- there's not even a shred of curiosity, no desire to find out about things outside her world; (3) and even when she's aware that I'm interested in something, she won't try to find out more about it although it's something that's important to me or that I really enjoy. Gaaaaaah!
So okay, she's my mom and I love her, but she will probably never understand why, when I go home, I need to pop over to the Internet cafe every evening to check my email... sigh. See, THIS is why I think being with a guy who knows nothing about IT stuff -- and doesn't care to know -- would drive me round the bend!
