Silver linings

I'm so pleased coz this morning I tried on one of my favourite dresses and I could fit into it! I haven't been able to wear it for about two years now. *dances around madly*

People have been noticing that I've lost lots of weight over the past few months. When they ask me what's my secret, I say, "Being stressed and broke." After all, I haven't been going to the gym... how else would I lose weight?

So I'm starting to see life as a sort of balance -- there is bad stuff, true, but you gotta look out for the good stuff. Being broke is probably one of the greatest incentives ever to stop overeating & guzzling down quit fast food (coz fast food here costs so much more than, say, a bowl of noodles!). Makes you really careful about your diet, it does ;)

And, like, yesterday I withdrew my last $20 and spent a quarter of it on lunch. But, tonight I attended a function where dinner was provided for free. There are always points of light in the darkness.

Plus, some of my friends have been planning to watch a movie (Madagascar) on Saturday and it's a show I would love to watch. Apart from being broke & unable to afford it, though, I won't be free Saturday evening -- my church cell group meeting has been switched to Saturday this week when it's usually on Wednesday. I wailed, "How could you guys go without me! Waaah!"

Then my boss messaged me yesterday saying that the media preview for the movie is tomorrow and asked if I'd like to go. WOULD I LIKE TO GO? For a free movie on a working Thursday morning? Of course I'd like to go! What, she had to ask?! *grin*

In the end, not only do I get to see the movie for free, I get to see it before my friends do. Hah! *thumbs nose at friends cheekily*

Speaking about thumbs... my thumb drive sort of decided yesterday that it didn't want to friend anybody anymore (very juvenile of it, if you ask me), and despite all overtures my computer couldn't get the thing to respond. My computer claimed the drive wasn't formatted but I knew for a fact that it was coz I've been using it over the past few weeks -- yes, it's nearly brand new, and already throwing temper tantrums! Tsk tsk.

Anyway, coincidentally (or maybe not?) I had been reading about file recovery programmes that afternoon, otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue what to do. It's amazing, there is a programme for almost anything, to perform almost any function. There is even anti-mosquito software and ghost-hunting software!

But I digress. I went online, downloaded a file recovery programme, ran it, and managed to recover the most critical files I needed. Couldn't recover all coz to get the full-featured programme I'd have to pay for it, and I'm broke, remember? But I didn't lose anything that wasn't replaceable. And if the reformat of the recalcitrant thumb drive fails to bring it in line, well, it's still under warranty.

Good and bad. Good and bad. Good and bad. I would like nothing more than to hide under the covers and moan about how life sucks... but the truth is, it really isn't that terrible. Okay, being broke is not nice (and I might get sick of tuna sandwiches by the end of the week) but then I have a housemate who has offered -- several times -- to loan me cash if I need it. What more could I ask for? Apart from a fairy grandmother or a rich boyfriend, of course... *grin*
