Idol thots
Today I'm aching from the misadventures of yesterday, have developed a sore throat, almost lost my voice, AND ended up working although it's supposed to be a public holiday (yesterday, a Sunday, was Labour Day, so today is a 'substitute' holiday). Bleh.
Recently two people whose blogs I read discussed what's been going on in American Idol. One in particular talked about the show in a very cryptic way. I didn't realise how far gone I am until I went back to check out her comments box and there were comments from people who hadn't been able to figure out what she was talking about! I, on the other hand, had cottoned on immediately and even empathised with her sentiments about the state of the show so far!
This reminds me of the time when I was sent to interview Kelly Clarkson, winner of the first season of American Idol. Kelly was in the region, promoting her debut album, which had just been released. My boss said, "You're going to interview Kelly Clarkson."
I was like, "Who?"
She said, "You know, the girl who won American Idol..."
I was like, "What's that?"
She said, "She sings that hit song, Miss Independent..."
I was like, "Never heard of it. What does it sound like?"
I'm still amazed that my boss sent me anyway. It was my second assignment out of the country (only went as far as our southern neighbour, Singapore, so that's not as glamorous as it sounds) and I was really green then. Kelly's schedule was such that I couldn't get a one-to-one interview with her, so I had to share interview time with people from other media outlets. We were given 15 minutes total.
Now, if you're sharing interview time, doing what we call a "roundtable" interview, you gotta be fast and aggressive with your questions coz other people probably want to ask other things and if you want to get the info you need, you gotta make yourself heard first. But I was new and timid and afraid to cut in, and mostly I let the others carry the tide of the interview. I consider that particular experience one of my least successful interviews. But you live and learn :)
Anyway, considering I didn't even know what American Idol was back then, I find it amusing that I had no problem understanding what Katy was talking about in her cryptic post, and equally amusing that I could wholeheartedly participate in a discussion about Nadia Turner on Mark La Roi's site.
Yes, many Malaysians are avid American Idol fans too. But I've lost interest in the competition ever since Nadia left. That was so WRONG! Sniff sniff...
