Spending money
I moved about 1/3 of my things over to the new place today, on my own. The Soulcare people said they'd help me move tomorrow after church (today, actually, since it's past midnight), so I left the bigger and heavier stuff for the guys to carry. :)
Called my bro and told him I needed his muscles. I'd actually sent him a text message yesterday but he hadn't replied. He said, "I can't call you or text you, I only have two cents left on my phone's credit!" He's using the prepaid system, you see. I laughed and told him that he'd better help me tomorrow, or his phone shall remain creditless. I'm supposed to top up the credit for him every two months.
Spent a lot of money today, buying poetry books Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, limericks, nonsense verse. Also got a short ladder for the new house, so that we'll be able to clean the ceiling fans and stuff. While I was at it, I finally got a full-length mirror, which I've wanted for years. I've never been able to see how I look like in my outfits; I just used my imagination. Now I finally have a mirror to preen in front of!
Also got a calendar with figure skating photos. It cost almost $40. I debated with myself: $40 for a calendar?! When I can get free calendars from Dad? (He gets free calendars from the medicine manufacturers) But I love the pictures. But... $40?!?
However, I recently decided that practicality is not everything. It may not be a necessary item in terms of usability but who's to say I don't really need it? I refuse to feel guilty for spending $40 on a calendar.
I wonder what God is thinking...
** Just a note about currency: when I blog, I usually use the dollar sign ($) because it makes it easier for most of my readers to identify with what I'm writing. I really mean Malaysian Ringgit (RM), of course. In terms of dollar value or purchasing power, RM1 is probably equivalent to US$1. For example, a can of Coca-cola costs RM1.50 here in 7-11. Most newspapers cost RM1.20 per paper. However, if you were to convert, then of course my comment about spending RM40 on a calendar wouldn't seem like a big deal, since RM1 = US$0.26, making RM40 = US$10.53!
