The Singapore stint
Flew back from Singapore yesterday - wow it was a luxurious stay! We flew first class and I had a whole hotel room to myself (for some reason I'd expected to have to share) and the hotel was the last word in luxury. Wish I could've stayed longer! It was a glimpse into how the other 1/16th of the world lives - I figure there aren't enough of the super-rich to make up 1/2 of the population, that's all... *grin*
Of course, we had excellent service in the hotel and had wonderful food, mmm! The other journalists there were all fashion journalists and this was my first time covering such an event, so I was quite lost in all the talk of "this season's colours" and Chanel's latest collection and John Galliano's designs. Good grief! One of the reporters gushed, "I just love Bvlgari! Don't you love Bvlgari?" he asked me. I looked sheepish. "I don't really follow all these things..." Talk about gauche! LOL
Met some colourful characters, and of course most of the guys there were gay. One of them asked me, "How long have you been working for your paper?" and when I said 8 months, he asked, "You're a fresh graduate?" I was like, "Yes - it shows, right?!" *rueful grin*
Even when we went for the launch, I was the one who was asking millions of questions and taking copious notes (like I usually do). Nobody else seemed to be taking notes at all! But I was so scared I might forget stuff, so I thought I'd better write down. They looked at me. "Is this your first time covering a fashion event?" and when I said yes, they told me, "Don't worry, you'll learn. You'll get used to it." Hah! *laughs*
Also called Bryan (an "email pal" - you know, as in pen-pal, only through email instead of snail mail) when I was in Singapore - he asked me to call - but we couldn't meet up coz I was there for such a short while, and we couldn't get our schedules to match. I enjoyed talking to him, he wasn't as intimidating as he sounds in email. I think it's coz he doesn't have a lot of time, so his emails tend to be rather terse. Comes across as impatient, sometimes. :)
